AFMX brings together award-winning and up-and-coming filmmakers and musicians from around the world to showcase and celebrate film and music, and provide a platform for education, collaboration, discovery and the sharing of impactful stories.
To enhance cultural richness by integrating film and music programs that provide entertainment and education for the community, contribute to the creative economy and support Albuquerque as an epicenter for film, music and the arts.
"I was really pleased to see the reaction that [AFME] got because of what they are building here and what they represent in terms of the arts. To see the enthusiasm from the audience, it really lifted me and is why Robert Lynch and I are here tonight." - Robert Redford, Founder of Sundance Film Festival
AFMX presents a unique, fun and educational program where thousands of attendees immerse themselves in film and music and have an appreciation for their influence on one another and pop culture.
"I am filled with the deepest gratitude for your love, dedication, and commitment to furthering the pursuit of artistry, creativity, and joy in the world! I could not have imagined a more seamless event from beginning to end. This was the moment of a lifetime!" - Giancarlo Esposito
"I had a great time hangin' with my buddy T Bone Burnett and all of the AFME folks. I love New Mexico!" - Jeff Bridges
The Albuquerque Film & Music Experience (AFMX) is entering its seventh year as a premier interactive film & music festival, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This year’s festival will be held September 2019. AFMX features domestic and international movies, engaging industry panels and workshops, exciting networking events, parties, live music, and more.
Education is a key component of AFMX’s activities and events. Year-round, AFMX helps young people explore the film and music industries, participate in the various aspects of production, and provide educational opportunities for those who may wish to pursue professional careers in film, music and related endeavors.
Positive Economic Development is a primary objective of AFMX at our annual festival, as well as other programs and events during the year. Albuquerque has emerged as one of the top film and TV production locations in the nation, with an industry that is leading the city’s economic growth. Whereas the physical beauty and constant sunshine of New Mexico have attracted film producers for decades, lower-costs, and generous incentives have enhanced the city and state’s attractiveness to the film industry. Netflix’s recent announcement to invest over one billion dollars, and locate its next production hub in Albuquerque is a testament to the significance of the industry in our City. AFMX, through its educational programs, supports professional development and the growth of the industry. In addition, AFMX is on course to become a significant, annual visitor attraction, while drawing attention to our robust film industry.
There are many film festivals around the world. One can only assume that supply is commensurate with demand, as movie, television and other media productions are at an all-time high in popularity. That said, the AFMX festival is different.
We know of no other major film festivals that give equal weight to music + film. Our core philosophy lies in emphasizing the interrelationship between film and music, and recognizing talent and artistry in both. Our name says it all!
This year, the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience has ramped up its commitment and belief in the symbiotic relationship between film and music. Moving forward, AFMX will be a celebration and recognition of the interdependence and equality of artistry in music and film.
Starting in 2019, the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience will choose a theme and program films and music that demonstrate the connectedness of the two creative mediums.
For 2019, AFMX will celebrate ROAD FLIQX, highlighting the cinematic and musical expression of the “open road”, a metaphor for the search for the enduring spirit of freedom. We will also feature a heart-revving lineup of other open-road movies and their soundtracks, featuring actors, directors, writers, musicians and others that helped make those films come alive.
The cornerstone of ROAD FLIQX will be the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Easy Rider, arguably the most recognized and emblematic road flick of all time. Images of Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson cruising the open roads of America (with New Mexico as its backdrop) to an unforgettable soundtrack by Steppenwolf, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Byrds, Roger McGuinn and others, are embedded in the hearts and minds of multiple generations.
And, as Taos, New Mexico was Dennis Hopper’s home, the festival will include a motorcycle ride to Hopper’s burial site, with a special ceremony to commemorate the anniversary.
The complete program is currently being assembled and further details will be made available when finalized.
